bagpipe construction
The bagpipes depicted on the following pages are different versions of a single instrument since they share the general structure and the pipes. The instrument is generally in A minor with a tuning of A=440 Hz at 20 °C (for more information on the relationship between tuning and temperature you can click here). The two drones are tuned an octave apart: the bass drone two octaves below the tonic of the melody and the tenor drone one octave above the bass. The volume of the instrument is rather high and this feature makes these bagpipes particularly suitable for outdoor performances. The pressure required on the bag, not being excessive, allows for a relaxed performance of the pieces. The double reeds of the chanters and the single reeds of the drones are made exclusively from "Arundo donax" cane. The bag is made of hand-sewn bovine leather. No synthetic material is used in the construction of these instruments. The external shapes are just some possible proposals and have been inspired both by ancient iconography and by the comparative study of traditional instruments still in use in different regions of Europe.
The completely handcrafted production of these instruments makes it possible to meet particular needs, with the possibility, upon request, of designing different shapes based on iconography or drawings.
